Vasectomy

Vasectomy is recommended by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) as the preferred method of sterilisation.

Vasectomy is a minor procedure that takes around 15 minutes and is very safe in competent hands.  Vasectomy carries a lower failure rate in terms of post-procedure pregnancies and there is less risk related to the procedure than female sterilisation.

Referrers should indicate why sterilisation is required and provide evidence of relevant obstetric history and use of contraception and give reasons and explanation of any intolerance.

The provision of the Primary Care/Community based Vasectomy Service is for those patients registered with a General Practitioner within Gloucestershire.

The Service Provider will accept referrals from Gloucestershire GP practices via e-Referral Service (eRS).

The service is for patients aged 18 years and over who are registered with a General Practitioner within Gloucestershire.

Please note: FSRH guidance states Additional care must be taken when counselling individuals under the age of 30 years or individuals without children who request sterilisation” (FSRH Clinical Guidance: Male and Female Sterilisation Summary of Recommendations - September 2014

  • The Service Provider must offer patients an initial appointment within a maximum of 12 weeks of GP referral.
  • The Service Provider must be able to evidence on receipt of patient consent that the vasectomy procedure will take place within a maximum of a further 6 weeks (total time from referral to treatment must not exceed 18 weeks).

Referring clinicians should receive details of the outcome of each patient visit within 48 hours from the time that the consultation took place, with a copy to the patient.

If a patient requires follow-up, the discharge letter must provide a clinical reason for the next appointment.

Marital breakdown, change of partner or remarriage is not unusual. Such events would not be considered sufficient grounds to give an individual priority for funding reversal of sterilisation.

In line with NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group’s (GCCG) Effective Clinical Commissioning Policies List (Dec 2015), GCCG will NOT fund reversal other than in exceptional individual circumstances - please see the Sterilisation Reversal IFR policy here.
