Direct Access Outpatient Hysteroscopy Service for Menstrual Disorders

Please refer to the guidance below prior to referring to GHFT's Direct Access Hysteroscopy Service.

The Outpatient hysteroscopy clinic for menstrual disorders aims to see, investigate and commence  treatment of women at one clinic appointment but EXCLUDING the following:

  • Pregnancy
  • 2ww referrals
  • IUD/IUS insertion only without hysteroscopy
  • Age <45 years
  • Post-menopausal 

Women between ages of 40 and 45 can be referred to this service only if risk factors for endometrial cancer present such as obesity, nulliparity, diabetes, hypertension, PCOS etc if they fit the criteria mentioned below;

  • Menorrhagia
  • Persistent IMB > 3 cycles
  • Frequent/continuous bleeding
  • Other reason for referral

The following interventions are recommended prior to referral to the service:

  • Abdominal and pelvic examination
  • Ultrasound scan if significant pelvic mass (palpable abdominally or uterus >12 weeks)
  • Full blood count (FBC)
  • Medical therapy has been tried/offered/declined

Please attach investigation results to the referral.  If patient agrees to have a Mirena inserted after hysteroscopy, can you please give information leaflet for consideration prior to appointment.
